Plot Summary

The Rocky Horror Picture Show starts off with the main characters Brad and Janet, outside the church sending their newly married friends off. This is where we hear the first song, “Dammit Janet,” . Brad confesses his love for Janet and proposes to her outside the venue. In the background, we see many easter eggs, and clues pointing towards later characters that will come up during the movie. During the song, they discuss how they will visit the professor in the science exhibit where they met. Following, they begin to drive home where their car breaks down, coincidently in the middle of the woods next to a large castle, meanwhile, it is storming. They decide to go through the woods, making their way to the castle, singing the song “Over at the Frankenstein Place”. This gives us another foreshadowing of what type of castle this appears to be. Upon entrance, they are greeted by Riff Raff, one of three servant-type characters. He invites them into this so-called “party” where we are then introduced to the song “Time Warp”. If the eccentricity of the movie hasn’t been seen yet, it is seen now by this song. This is one of the first times the cult classic lives up to its name. Brad and Janet begin to question what they got themselves into when we are then introduced to the most important character of the movie Frank N. Furter, a transvestite scientist. As he sings his provocative song we learn more about him, and his goals of wanting a man so badly, that he creates one for himself. This leads us to the weirdest room in the castle, his “lab”. The song “I’ll Make you a Man”, plans as the comedy-musical gets stranger. We are then introduced to Rocky Horror himself, the “man” Frank N. Furter created. He vows he can make Rocky Horror an ideal man, and before he can continue, Eddy, played by Meatloaf, comes in on a motorcycle, singing “Hot Patootie”. A jealous Furter kills Eddy at the end of the song.

Brad and Janet are then shown to separate bedrooms where they are both seduced by Frank N. Futer. Whereas one thinks things could not get weirder, they do. Janet is upset over the loss of innocence she experienced with Frank N. Futer and finds Brad in bed smoking a cigarette with him. She then goes to seduce Rocky Horror, who she found alone cowering in a bed. While this incident is happening, a visitor comes to the castle, Dr. Everett Scott, looking for his nephew Eddy. Dr. Scott also knows Brad, being his former science teacher. Frank is suspicious of Scots intentions, especially considering the coincidence of both Brad and Dr. Scott’s visit. Frank then sees Janet and Rocky in bed together, which angers Brad and Frank.

Everyone then shares an awkward dinner, where they learn it is made out of Eddie’s brain. Janet runs into Rocky’s arms which leads her to be chased around by Frank and they all somehow end up back in the scary lab. Frank freezes all of them with his Medusa Tranquiliser. He then dresses them up in costume where they all have to perform a cabaret song, like puppets, with Frank as the leader. Finally, the ending has come where Riff Raff and the other “servant” Magenta inform Frank he has failed the mission and before Frank can redeem himself saying he can be taken as a prisoner he is killed by Riff Raff along with the last servant Columbia. A devastated Rocky takes Frank’s remains and plunges to his death.

The movie ends with Riff Raff explaining how they will be returning to their alien planet Transexual and that Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott should leave immediately. The injured group leaves in the smog and we end with the narrator announcing that the human race is “lost in time, and lost in space… and meaning”.
